The hardest part of arranging caregivers for elderly Lisle IL parents is not finding them; it is the conversation at the kitchen table where your father says he is fine, he has always been fine, and he does not need a stranger in the house. Guided with Grace has helped a great many Lisle families through that conversation, and this page is partly about how to have it: what to say, what not to say, and how the first visit is designed so that a proud man agrees to a second one.
Part of the conversation is being concrete. ‘Someone to help’ sounds like supervision; ‘someone to do the laundry stairs and drive you to Good Samaritan’ sounds like sense. Our home care services are chosen task by task for that reason.
Once the first visits have gone well, the plan can grow without another difficult conversation. Lisle clients often add hands-on personal care after a hospital stay or a companion for the quiet days, with the same caregiver carrying on.
Four things we have learned from Lisle kitchen tables. None of them is a trick; they are simply what works with a proud person.
'I worry about you' invites an argument. 'The laundry stairs scare me; can someone else carry the basket?' invites a yes.
Parents who will not accept help for themselves will often accept it to stop their children worrying. That is a legitimate reason and we say so.
Two visits, then a review. Nobody is signing up for the rest of their life, and most parents relax once they realize that.
The right person, matched to his temperament, wins the argument by being useful and unbossy. Our job is to send that person.
Part of the conversation is knowing what else is available, because a parent who sees the whole picture is more willing to accept one piece of it.
Lisle Township Senior Services (630-968-2087) provides application assistance and referrals, handles the Benefit Access program and RTA reduced-fare permits, and books Ride DuPage for residents 65 and older and people with disabilities, which runs seven days a week, 24 hours a day, through the township office. The Lisle Park District’s Senior Center at 1925 Ohio Street (630-964-3410) offers drop-in activities, programs and day trips for active adults 50 and older, and our caregivers can drive to and from it. The Morton Arboretum, on Lisle’s doorstep, is the outing most of our Lisle clients ask for.
At county level, the Illinois Community Care Program for residents 60 and older is run through DuPage County Community Services (630-407-6500), Meals on Wheels comes from the DuPage Senior Citizens Council, and the son or daughter who has been doing all the checking-in can turn to AgeGuide’s Family Caregiver Support Program (1-800-528-2000). The Naperville-Lisle Townships TRIAD is a senior crime-prevention partnership worth knowing about. The nearest hospitals are Advocate Good Samaritan in Downers Grove, home to DuPage County’s only Level I trauma center, and Endeavor Health Edward Hospital in Naperville; a discharge from either is often what finally makes the conversation easy.
Guided with Grace serves Lisle, Woodridge and Warrenville from our Naperville office. More about the agency.
Since the first visit decides everything, we choose for manner before anything else: someone easy-going who will help your father with a job rather than take it off him, and who can let a silence be. Every caregiver is screened, background checked and trained before placement, and Guided with Grace is a licensed and insured non-medical home care agency in Illinois.
We keep sending the same person wherever the rota allows, since a proud man takes help from someone he knows rather than from a company. Our FAQ page answers the practical questions.
You do not need his permission to call us. You need it for the first visit, and we help you get it.
Phone (630) 608-3956 or use the contact page. Describe what worries you and what he has already refused, and we will help you work out how to raise it.
We come to the house, hear how he likes his week to run and quietly note the risks he would rather not talk about.
Two or three tasks, a couple of visits and a review date. Nothing he cannot cancel.
Care can often begin within a few days of the consultation, and the first visit is deliberately undemanding.
Any one of these can be the whole plan or a single piece of it.
Our Lisle caregivers also cover the neighboring communities.
Yes. Most of our Lisle arrangements begin with a call from a son or daughter whose parent has said no. We help you plan the conversation, frame the first visit as a trial around one or two tasks, and send a caregiver chosen to win him over.
Name a task, not a diagnosis; make it about your worry rather than his decline; ask for two visits and a review rather than a decision. Those three things get more parents to yes than any amount of pleading.
It does happen with proud fathers. The caregiver leaves pleasantly, and we try again with a different day, a smaller task or a different person. Patience wins more often than pressure.
The township arranges rides, benefit applications and referrals; we send a person to the house to do the jobs on the days you choose. The two work well together.
Each caregiver is screened, background checked and trained before placement, and Guided with Grace is licensed and insured in Illinois. You are told who is coming, and you can ask us to send someone else at any point.
It grows gradually, usually with the caregiver he already trusts, so adding personal care, memory support or nights does not mean starting the persuading all over again.
Yes. Woodridge, Warrenville, Westmont, Wheaton and Bolingbrook are all served by the same team.
Usually within a few days of the consultation. If there is a discharge date, tell us and we plan to it; a discharge is often what makes the conversation easy.
Tell us what has slipped and what your parent has said about help, and we will plan the first visit together. Call (630) 608-3956 or schedule a consultation.
