Respite Care in DuPage County, IL

Thousands of DuPage County residents are caring for an aging parent or spouse at home, mostly unpaid, mostly unseen, and mostly exhausted. Respite care DuPage County families arrange through Guided with Grace is designed for them: planned or short-notice relief from a trained, background-checked caregiver so the person doing the caring can rest, work or simply have a day that belongs to them.

Respite Care DuPage County Caregivers Can Actually Use

Respite is any of our care, delivered so you can step away. It can be a standing block every week, a weekend, a two-week stretch while you travel, or a few hours arranged when something comes up. Our respite care service covers the whole county on the same terms.

Two kinds of respite come up most often. Planned respite, such as every Saturday afternoon, keeps a caregiver from burning out in the first place. Recovery respite, after the family caregiver has had their own surgery or crisis, is often how families discover that ongoing personal care or a weekly companion would make life sustainable.

Who Needs Caregiver Relief in DuPage County

Caregiver burnout is gradual and easy to dismiss. Poor sleep, missed appointments of your own, short temper and the feeling that you cannot remember your last free afternoon are all warning signs. Respite is also the first step toward broader senior home care in DuPage County when needs grow.

Working adult children

Commuting to the Loop or working from home while managing a parent's care in the next town is two jobs. Respite covers the hours you cannot.

Caregiving spouses

Husbands and wives in their seventies and eighties are the most depleted caregivers we meet and the least likely to ask for help.

The sandwich generation

Raising kids in Wheaton or Downers Grove while caring for a parent with dementia leaves nothing for yourself. Respite gives you back a few hours.

Families with travel, surgery or emergencies

A wedding, your own procedure, a work trip: life keeps happening. Respite means you can be there.

Respite Resources Across DuPage County

DuPage County has more support for family caregivers than most people realize. Our respite care is built to work alongside it.

AgeGuide, the Area Agency on Aging for DuPage County, runs a Family Caregiver Support Program that includes respite services, gap-filling help for unexpected situations, legal services and caregiver counseling; call 1-800-528-2000 to learn whether you qualify. DuPage County Community Services, at 630-407-6500, provides referrals for adult day services and coordinates the Illinois Community Care Program, which can include adult day care that gives caregivers daytime relief. The Community Adult Day Center in Downers Grove is one of the county’s listed adult day options; some families combine it with in-home respite in the evenings and on weekends.

If your loved one has dementia, the Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter offers support groups and a 24/7 Helpline at 1-800-272-3900, and the DuPage County Care Center hosts an Alzheimer’s Association caregiver support group. The DuPage Senior Citizens Council’s Meals on Wheels, friendly visits and well-being checks can lighten a caregiver’s load on ordinary days, and Ride DuPage provides subsidized rides for residents 65 and older so a parent can get to appointments without you driving.

Respite is particularly valuable after a hospital stay at Central DuPage, Edward, Elmhurst, Good Samaritan or Hinsdale hospitals, when the family caregiver is most likely to be overwhelmed. Learn more about Guided with Grace.

Handing Over Care Without Losing Sleep

Letting someone else follow the routine you built is hard. Every Guided with Grace caregiver is screened, background checked and trained, and we are a licensed and insured non-medical home care agency in Illinois.

Before the first respite visit we document your loved one’s day with you: medications and timing, meals, mobility, bathroom routine, what soothes them and what upsets them. The caregiver follows your plan. For recurring respite we keep the same caregiver so your loved one sees a familiar face each time. Our FAQ page covers more.
